Playing Ace King in Fixed Limit Texas Holdem

Playing Ace King in Fixed Limit Texas Hold'em

In no-limit hold'em, ace king is a hand that some players always try to get all-in before the flop with, hoping opponents will fold, but figuring they are at worst 50-50 if they do not. You can actually find this type player at most texas hold em sites. Whatever the wisdom of this play, in fixed limit Texas Holdem there is no way to get all-in pre-flop, so you are going to have to play your ace king.

Ace King Before the Flop in Fixed-Limit Texas Hold'em

In a standard fixed limit hold'em game, no matter if you're playing online Texas Holdem or in a live game, it's usually a good idea to raise with ace king pre-flop about 80 percent of the time. There are a number of reasons for this: 1) You have a decent chance of hitting the flop, which will give you top pair top kicker. 2) You may thin the field enough that your ace king will hold up unimproved. 3) You may be able to bet aggressively throughout the entire hand and represent an overpair, getting opponents to fold. 4) You may be able to get a free card on the turn to take a shot at hitting your ace or king on the river.

Ace King on the Flop in Fixed Limit Texas Holdem

If you bet before the flop, you should usually bet after the flop whether you hit your hand or not. This is called a continuation bet and it is useful for the following reasons: 1) If you hit your hand, you can get more money in the pot. Players may be suspicious if you check when a big card flops after betting pre-flop and not fall for a slow play attempt. Furthermore, if you check you, may be giving opponents a free shot at two pair or a big draw. 2) If you miss, your bet suggests you may have an overpair, and hands that did not hit may have trouble calling you. 3) If you are in late position and bet the flop when you miss, it will often be checked to you on the turn, giving you the option to bet if you hit your hand or if you think you can convince the remaining players to fold, or check and see if the river is an ace or king for free.

Ace King on the Turn and River in Fixed-Limit Texas Hold'em

If opponents have been flat calling and you still haven't hit on the turn, you will have a decision to make. Either you will bet on both streets and hope that is enough heat to win the pot without a showdown or you will try to see the river cheaply and hope to hit your hand. Which you will do will depend on how many players are left (the fewer the better for the aggressive strategy) and what their tendencies are (only players who are capable of laying down a hand for a single big bet should be bluffed at).
